Babysitter Changes Plea in Child Abuse Case

Ashley Cope, ACSO
Albany County Sheriff’s Office

Ashley May Cope, of Rock River has changed her plea on charges of felony aggravated child abuse.

A court document filed on August 8th says that Ashley May Cope appeared in District Court in Laramie before judge Jeffery Donnell, to change her plea to “guilty.”

The case stems from a February incident, where Albany County Sheriffs Deputies responded to the scene of a fifteen-month-old child not breathing in the community of Rock River.  The child was transported to Ivinson Memorial Hospital, in Laramie where it was observed the child had several bruises as well as what was described as “traumatic brain injury.”

Further investigation led officials to believe that the child’s injuries were suffered while he was in the care of Cope, the child’s babysitter.  Sheriff’s affidavit says that when confronted with these findings, she admitted to slapping the child because it would not stop crying.  She also admitted to “thwacking” the child on the ears as well as shaking the child.

Cope will face a sentencing hearing at a later date.  She could face as much as  25 years in prison, fines up to $10,000 or both.
