In search of the perfect relationship? Quit looking, because they don't exist. However, there are ways to keep a happy relationship going, buy not doing some of these things.  Today on the Top 5 at 7:45, I'll highlight some of the things and behaviors that healthy and happy people do not do in their relationships. May be why they've lasted so long.

  1. No Complaints - One thing I have problems with and that is hearing people at work talk openly to their co-workers about how sorry their spouse is. Pretty soon, everyone in the company hears about all the bad habits and behaviors of the spouse. Keep this to yourself and know when and who to talk to about real issues that need to be addressed.
  2. Not Critical - It's easy to criticize, but sometimes difficult to compliment. Instead of zeroing in on the negative all the time, healthy and happy couples find ways to keep criticisms out of the relationship.
  3. Stay Away From The "Hollywood Fantasy Relationships" - Hollywood is just that - fantasy. People try to incorporate what they see in Hollywood into their own relationship. I'm sorry, but fornicating and committing adultery with someone's spouse, is not realistic and certainly not a good idea for a happy and healthy relationship. Do not enter! Do not trespass!
  4. Quiet About Past Relationships - Unless you have a child from a previous relationship, thus making it obvious that you've been with someone before, keep conversations about old flames out of the picture. People with healthy and happy relationships aren't always talking about what they used to do with Steve or Carol. Keep the past in the past and focus on the now and how to stay happy in the future.
  5. Talk Finances - Money is one of the big three that could end a relationship. Happy and healthy relationships have no problem being open about finances. It's good to talk about money, budgets and spending, whether you have money or not.
