It was the year 1911, that the Plains Hotel opened its doors for visitors to experience what was known as Wyoming's first premier, full service hotel.   If you haven't made your way to the Historic Plains Hotel, you may want to put that on your bucket list. Here are 5 interesting facts and stories surrounding, what is now known as, the Historic Plains Hotel.

  1. The Front Desk - The original front desk was made of solid marble and was guarded by a bronze statue. The statue was billed as a state of the art piece.
  2. Telephones - One of the attractions of the Plains Hotel back in the early 1900's, was that it boasted of a telephone in every room. By the way, they weren't just boasting, it was true. Could you imagine being a switch board operator back then?
  3. The Logo - The logo has been housed by a photo of Chief Little Shield and painted by J.E. Stimson in 1916. He was an Arapaho Native who brought many of his people to Cheyenne, in 1915, to observe and celebrate Cheyenne Frontier Days. It has been said that his family still comes every year to enjoy the event and stays at the Historic Plains Hotel.
  4. Who Was Thomas Molesworth? - Thomas Molesworth was a furniture maker out of Cody, Wyoming. He was the hotels designer in the 1930's. He staged the hotel with beautiful motifs and rugs to upholster the chairs and couches, also using polished native American woods and stretched hide lampshades.
  5. United Airlines Stewardesses - When United Airlines established a stewardess school here in the 1940's, to take a break, many of the trainees would take a break in the historic Wigwam Room at the hotel and much socializing took place then.
