Yellowstone Firefighters Gaining on Park Fires

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. (AP) — Cooler temperatures and rain have helped to calm wildfires burning in Yellowstone National Park.

Firefighters extinguished one new fire that was started by lightning on Sunday near Tower Junction. A second lightning-caused fire east of Tower Junction was being allowed to burn because it was in a remote area.

There are five fires burning in Yellowstone.

The largest fire has burned about 64 square miles since it was started Aug. 8 by lightning. It is located between the park's western boundary and Madison Junction.

Another fire has burned about 15 square miles on the northern side of the park.

All entrances to Yellowstone, and all major roads and tourist attractions are open.
