Two long-time SEWAC rivals square off in the WyoPreps Small School ‘Game of the Week’ for prep football.

WyoPreps takes you to Class 1A-9 Man, as top-ranked Lusk goes on the road to face No. 4 Pine Bluffs.

Both teams are 1-0 but in different ways. The Hornets went on the road last Thursday and posted a 30-0 victory at Riverside. Meanwhile, Lusk had their game canceled due to a forfeit, so they haven’t officially played a game.

WyoPreps talked with Pine Bluffs head coach Will Gray and Tigers head coach Ryan Nelson ahead of the game. Gray talked about what he learned about his team from the first game, areas to improve upon, veteran QB Stu Lerwick, weapons around him, and getting ready to face the vaunted Lusk rushing attack. Nelson discussed not playing a game last week and how tough that was, how they’ll lean on their lineman, what he’s expecting out of Pine Bluffs, and the second year of 9-man football. That’s all in the audio interviews at the top of the story.

The Hornets put up 348 yards of offense in their win. Lusk is known for their ground attack that averaged better than 460 yards per game a season ago. With all their lineman returning, the Tigers will pound the football again this season, just without four-time all-state running back Drake Lamp, who has graduated.

The two had fairly similar defenses a year ago but both coaches are looking to improve in that area, as well.

According to wyoming-football.com, this will be the 42nd meeting in football between the two schools. Lusk has controlled the series and leads 32-9. The Hornets won four straight from 2015-2018, but the Tigers have won the last two meetings.

The game starts at 7 p.m. at Carlstrum Field in Pine Bluffs.
