Laramie welcomes residents to discuss property tax cuts

The Laramie City Council and the Albany County Commission have scheduled a joint work session next week on the property tax initiative that will go before Wyoming voters in the November General Election.

Ballot Initiative Would Cut Residential Property Taxes In Half

The proposal, formally known as the People's Initiative to Limit Property Taxes, would cut residential property taxes by 50 percent.

Supporters of the initiative say Wyoming residential property taxes are too high and maintain local governments and schools could make up most or all of the revenue lost from the decreased tax revenues by cutting waste and being more efficient. They say in some cases Wyoming residents are being driven out of their homes by property taxes

Opponents argue that despite all of the outcry over Wyoming's supposedly high residential property taxes, the Cowboy State actually has only the 40th highest tax rate. They say the perception that local governments and schools waste a lot of money is false, and that the initiative could hurt public safety and education.

The meeting will be held at the Laramie Municipal Operations Center at 4373 N 3rd Street, Laramie, WY, on September 8th at 6 PM.

To help the residents of Albany County and City of Laramie better understand the People’s Initiative and other proposals at the table, the Work Session will host the Wyoming Taxpayers Association (WTA).

Mr. Hank Hoversland, WTA Executive Director, will be there to present information regarding the People’s Initiative and answer questions residents may have surrounding it. The Wyoming Taxpayers Association will present to the public on the People’s Initiative for the first time at this Work Session.
