A Cheyenne lawmaker says an initiative to legalize medical marijuana in Wyoming has a good chance of passing if supporters can gather enough signatures to get it on the 2016 ballot.

The Wyoming Chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML) has until February 8 to gather the 25,673 valid signatures needed to put the question before voters next year.

"We have some straw polls that say that if it is placed on the ballot it has a very good chance of passing," said Representative Jim Byrd, D-Cheyenne.

Representative Byrd says NORML has some serious work to do if they're going to get the initiative on the ballot. So far, the group has only collected about 20% of the needed signatures.
