The Riverton Veterans Hall has launched an online fundraiser to repair the Battle Cross Memorial for Command Sergeant Major Kevin Griffin which was damaged last week and to help capture the vandal responsible for desecrating the monument.

The statue, depicting the iconic battle cross with combat boots, rifle, and helmet, was built in honor of Riverton native and United States Army Command Sgt. Major Kevin Griffin, who was killed by a suicide bomber in Afganistan in 2012. Sometime last week, the memorial at Veterans Memorial Park outside City Hall was damaged and the rifle and boots were taken.

Riverton Police described the vandalism as a "purposeful act of disrespect to not only the monument, to the fallen Command Sergeant Major Griffin, but also to all of those who have served."

The Veterans Hall hopes to raise enough money to repair or replace the monument and to offer a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the vandal(s).
