Albany County Assessor Reminds Wyoming Homeowners About Tax Exemptions
Albany County Assessor Chelsie Mathews wants homeowners to be aware of two property tax exemption programs that are available to them.
It should be mentioned that these are statewide exemptions, so they also apply in the rest of Wyoming.
One of these is the Long-Term Homeowners Exemption, which is available only for 2025 and 2026
Long-Term Homeowners Exemption
According to the County Assessor website, the criteria for eligibility for this exemption is as follows:
1. The owner or their spouse is 65 years of age or older.
2. The owner or their spouse has paid residential property tax in Wyoming for 25 years or more (these do not have to be consecutive years).
3. Property must be used as a primary residence (must reside in the home for not less than 8 months of the year).
This exemption can eliminate 50 percent of your tax liability on your primary residence and up to 35 acres of land. It's also worth mentioning that although you need to have paid residential property taxes in Wyoming for 25 years, it doesn't have to be on the same home or even in the same county.
The deadline for allying for this exemption is the 4th Monday in May.
Albany County homeowners can apply for this exemption here. Residents of other Wyoming counties are also also eligible, but should apply through their local county assessor's office.
Homeowners Exemption
Here are the criteria for qualifying for the Homeowners Exemption according to the Assessor website:
1 Must be used on residential single-family structures including houses, modular homes, mobile homes, townhomes, or individual condominium units and associated land.
2. The structure must be intended for human habitation and be habitable.
3. For tax year 2026, the property must be used as a primary residence (must reside in the home for not less than 8 months of the year).
4. If you have qualified for the Long Term Homeowners exemption you will not qualify for this exemption until tax year 2027.
The deadline for applying for this exemption is February 1. You can apply for this exemption here. You can also visit your local county assessor's office.
