Colorado authorities have launched a full investigation after an apparent gunshot wound was found on a Wyoming man who was initially thought to have been run over by a commercial truck.

Nathan Combs, 49, of Burns, Wyoming, died on the afternoon of May 18 at an intersection of two county roads west of Hereford, Colo.

The initial report to authorities was of a fatal traffic accident. According to a press release from the Weld County Sheriff's Office, preliminary information suggested the driver of a commercial truck was performing maintenance on the vehicle when the truck unexpectedly moved, running the man over.

Combs was pronounced dead at the scene.

But as deputies looked into the death, they found Combs had not been run over. Instead, they believe Combs died from what was evidently a gunshot wound.

Evidence at the scene, investigators say, suggested the wound was not self-inflicted.

The sheriff's office is currently looking for any information that could help solve the crime. Since the investigation remains active, details are limited at this time and the sheriff's office is not releasing further information.

Anyone with information on the crime can call the Weld County Sheriff's Office at 970-356-4015 or Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
