Wyoming golfers finish strong, places fifth in Erie
LARAMIE -- Wyoming Cowboy Golf finished strong on Tuesday in the final round of the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational.
The Cowboys shot a 283 (-5) round on Tuesday for a 54-hole total of 835 (-29) to tie the host team Colorado for fifth place in the field of 17 collegiate golf teams.
Cowboy Jimmy Dales fired a 67 (-5) on Tuesday to move up 27 spots to tie for seventh place, marking his fourth consecutive Top 25 finish in as many tournaments this season.
Entering the final round in fifth place, Wyoming battled throughout the final round with the host Buffs and the No. 48 ranked University of San Diego Toreros for fourth and fifth place. The Cowboys ended up tying CU for fifth at 835 (-29), while San Diego placed fourth at 833 (-31).
It was the second out of Wyoming’s four tournaments this season where they placed fifth. In addition to finishing fifth out of 17 teams at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational on Tuesday, UW also placed fifth out of 21 teams at the Gene Miranda Falcon Invitational.
Dales not only made the biggest move of the day of any individual, going from tied for 34th entering the final round to tied for seventh at the end of the tournament, but his round of 67 (-5) was the second-best round of the day. Dales posted four birdies, 12 pars and one bogey in Tuesday’s final round. But it was the 12th hole where Dales made his biggest move, recording an eagle on the 555-yard, par-five hole. He finished with a three-round total of 206 (-10).
Joining Dales with a Top 25 finish of his own was Cowboy Tyler Severin, who tied for 20th at 208 (-8). Kirby Coe-Kirkham tied for 33rd at 212 (-4), followed by Jaren Calkins in 38th at 213 (-3) and Bryce Waters at 218 (+2) to finish 60th.
“I’m really proud of the guys’ performance this week,” said Joe Jensen, UW Director of Golf and head men’s golf coach. “Our guys really competed hard against some really good teams. San Diego advanced to the NCAA Championships a year ago, and Colorado was playing on its home course. It was a great experience for us to be in that situation and to come through with a strong performance.
“This was a very positive tournament for us. We are definitely trending in the right direction.”
Wyoming Cowboys who played as individuals included: Patrick Azevedo, who tied for 38th; Jared Edeen in 54th; Cade McLaughlin in 60th; and Aidan Mann in 85th.
The team title was won by Boise State, which shot a 818 (-46). The individual title was captured by Harrison Kingsley of San Diego. Kingsley entered the final round tied for 10th but fired the lowest round of the day with a 66 (-6) to take medalist honors.
The tournament was played at the Colorado National Golf Club in Erie, Colo., and was hosted by the University of Colorado. The course measured 7,676 yards and played to a par of 72.
