A Sweetwater County Sheriff's Deputy is being recognized for saving the life of a violent assault suspect, according to Sweetwater County Sheriff Mike Lowell.

The sheriff says Deputy Sheriff L.J. Reese was handling a domestic violence call on June 19th when he encountered the suspect, 28-year-old Chase James (pictured above), who had put his fist through a window.

Sheriff Lowell says James was bleeding profusely, with his wound spurting arterial blood. Deputy Reese called for emergency medical help and applied a tourniquet to James to slow the bleeding, even though the suspect kept trying to resist Reese's efforts to help him.

When the emergency responders showed up, they took over for Reese, transporting James to Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County. He was later taken to the Sweetwater County Detention Center, where he remained at last report.

James has been charged with domestic battery and strangulation of a household member. His bond has been set at $100,000, cash or surety. Authorities have so far not identified the victim in the case.

Deputy Reese, meanwhile, has been given a commendation that reads, in part, “The actions that Deputy Reese took on June 18, 2018 saved the subjects life. Sweetwater County citizens and the Sheriff’s Office are lucky to have him.”
