Wyoming Cowboy golf receives Presidents Special Recognition Award
LARAMIE -- The Wyoming Cowboy Golf team has received one of the most prestigious academic awards in college golf, earning Presidents Special Recognition honors from the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) for this past season.
A team has to have achieved a team grade-point average of 3.50 or above to receive the recognition. Wyoming was one of only 41 NCAA Division I programs recognized for the 2020-21 academic year.
The Cowboys achieved a 3.62 team GPA for the past year, which also set a new UW men’s golf program high for team GPA.
In addition to being one of only 41 Division I programs to achieve the award, Wyoming was one of only two Mountain West men’s golf programs to receive Presidents Special Recognition honors this year. New Mexico was the other Mountain West program.
“This is an award that we’ve been striving to achieve for several years,” UW Director of Golf Joe Jensen said. “To see that we now have achieved this honor, it is very rewarding. It’s very hard to win and its very hard to succeed academically. I appreciate the effort of all our student-athletes, our academic staff, our administration and our faculty. It has been great to have our faculty be supportive of our student-athletes, particularly this past year during a very challenging year.
“It is also important for our supporters and donors to see our young men receive this high academic honor. While we have consistently been recognized as an All-Academic Team by the GCAA (3.00 team gpa or higher), we haven’t earned this Presidents Award for awhile, so it is very satisfying to see. Our kids deserve a great deal of the credit. In the end, it is the time and effort they put in that makes this possible.”
For the past 11 straight years, the University of Wyoming men’s golf team had been named a GCAA All-Academic Team for earning a team gpa of 3.00 or higher. With this year’s Presidents Special Recognition Award from the GCAA, it marks the 12th straight season that Wyoming has been honored as one of the top academic teams in the country.
