The Cheyenne Office of the National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the Sierra Madre and a winter weather advisory for the Snowy Range mountains through 5 p.m. on Friday.

The service issues this statement on Thursday morning:

"Winter Storm Warnings & Winter Weather Advisories are in effect Today & Friday for the Snowy & Sierra Madre Mountain Ranges, as well as adjacent lower elevation areas across primarily Carbon County. The heaviest snow is expected over the Sierra Madre Range, where up to 2 feet of snow may fall over the next 36 hours especially on southwest facing slopes. The high peaks of the Snowy Range may receive up to one foot of new snow. In the lower elevations including Rawlins, Elk Mountain, and Saratoga, 2 to 5 inches of snow is expected with the majority of the snow expected this evening through mid-day Friday. Snow & blowing snow will make travel extremely dangerous, or even impossible especially in the high country. If planning any outdoor recreational activities, be prepared for severe winter conditions which may be life-threatening if precautions are not taken."
