The University of Wyoming announced Monday morning that current UW president Laurie Nichols will assume a faculty position after her three-year contract expires June 30 .

She assumed her role as UW president in May, 2016 after being offered the job in December 2015.

Before coming to UW, Nichols served as the chief academic officer at South Dakota State University.

“It has been an honor and privilege to serve as president of the University of Wyoming these past three years,” Nichols said in a written release. “I am proud of the progress we made. Our success included launching a comprehensive strategic plan and marketing campaign; elevating the Honors College; opening a Native American center; realizing enrollment growth; and launching several new academic degree programs to meet state workforce needs. I wish the university and the state of Wyoming much success in the years ahead.

“The Board of Trustees is excited for future opportunities for the University of Wyoming, the state of Wyoming and its citizens,” UW Board of Trustees Chairman Dave True said in the release. “The board thanks President Nichols for her service and wishes her and her husband, Tim, well.”

It remains unclear if the UW Board of Trustees has begun a search for Nichols's replacement.

This is a developing story and updates will be provided as they become available.
