CODY, Wyo. (AP) — A Wyoming couple died in an all-terrain vehicle crash on a U.S. Forest Service road in northwestern Wyoming.

The Park County sheriff's office says 69-year-old Allen Heald Phillips of Cody and his 66-year-old wife Annette died Friday afternoon when their ATV tumbled off a steep road in the Shoshone National Forest southwest of Clark.

The sheriff's office says no one witnessed the crash, but statements from friends who were traveling with them and evidence at the scene indicated the couple had tried to negotiate a hairpin turn in the Morrison Jeep Trail and got too close to the edge. In trying to back up to get a better angle they backed over the edge.

Park County officials say the ATV came to rest on its top on a lower part of the trail. The Cody Enterprise reports (bit.ly/2wvp8mP) a section of the trail is closed.
