As residents spring forward an hour for Daylight Saving Time this Sunday, Cheyenne Fire and Rescue is reminding people to change their smoke alarm batteries.

Prevention Bureau Chief Byron Mathews says roughly two-thirds of home fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or non-working smoke alarms.

"The fire department recommends (you) have a smoke alarm inside of each sleeping room, directly adjacent or outside of each sleeping room and one on every level," said Mathews. "A carbon monoxide alarm should be on every level as well."

Mathews says it's also a great time for families to practice a home fire drill, so everyone knows what to do if there's a fire.

"Everyone can evacuate, they can practice going to their meeting place," said Mathews. "It gives (you) one additional skill in the event that (you) have a home fire emergency."
