Should Late Fees Be Stopped At The Laramie County Library? [POLL]
The new trend sweeping the nation in the library system is, no more late fees on books. County Librarian Carey Hartmann told the Wyoming Eagle Tribune that she asked her board to consider stopping late fees on books.
Carey says that the library gains very little off of the fees. Research has found that most kids will not return to the library once their card is blocked for $10 in fees. In the past year, there has been roughly $20,000 collected in fees from children, that is less than half of one percent of the $5.7 million projected budget.
There are approximately 500 American libraries that still charge for the late fee, but states like California, Florida, Illinois, and Ohio have gotten rid of late fees altogether. The concern with the state is if there is no late fee what will encourage the kids to return their books on time.
