The last steel beam that will go into the construction of Cheyenne's new Public Safety Building was put in place Wednesday afternoon.

A crowd which included Police Chief Brian Kozak and several other police officers, several state legislators and other local dignitaries and members of the construction crew were all on had to celebrate the milestone.

The final beam was signed by many of those present as well as Cheyenne Mayor Rick Kaysen, who was out of town but signed the beam ahead of time.

Lt. Mark Munari, coordinator for the Public Safety Building project, said it was 'exciting and gratifying" to see this stage of work on the project finished. He also said everything is currently on pace for a February 2016 opening of the facility, which will house the Cheyenne Police Department as well as Cheyenne Fire and Rescue Administration and other emergency responders.

Laramie County voters in 2012 approved spending $25 million in sixth penny sales tax funds to build a new public safety building.

The city council eventually chose the site of the former Dineen's Car Dealership in downtown Cheyenne as the location, in part because some of the existing building could be included as part of the new facility.
