Internal Revenue Service spokeswoman Karen Connelly says there have been widespread reports recently of bogus IRS agents trying to con money out of Cheyenne residents.

Connelly says it's important to remember that IRS agents will never initiate contact through social media, e-mail or by visiting your home and demanding immediate payment of supposed back taxes. One common scam reported in Cheyenne recently has featured phony agents contacting people by telephone and demanding immediate payment.

In some cases, the con artists are fairly believable and may even feature phony IRS badge numbers. The agency always initiates contact through the mail, and anyone who calls and represents themselves as working for the IRS should be reported to law enforcement immediately.

You can always find out whether you owe back taxes to the agency by calling 1-800-829-1040.
