IRS Scams Resurface In Wyoming
Tax season is over for 2018, but apparently phony IRS agents are still at work.
Sweetwater County Sheriff Mike Lowell says people are still being targeted by a couple of different phone scams featuring bogus IRS agents trying to collect supposed back taxes. One scam features people calling intended victims directly and demanding immediate payment for phony back taxes.
The other variation targets intended victims with either direct or recorded calls telling people to call a certain number back. The men or women who answer the call will identify themselves as government agents and demand immediate payment, often threatening arrest if the payment is not made.
The sheriff says the important thing to remember is that the IRS always contacts delinquent taxpayers first with a letter, not with a phone call.
Anyone who thinks they might actually owe the IRS money can call the agency directly at 1-800-829-1040. Phone scams can be reported to the Treasury Inspector General at 1-800-366-4484.
