The Laramie County Community College Board of Trustees unanimously voted to change the school's name to Wyoming State College, effective July 1, 2027.

LCCC President Dr. Joe Schaffer had recommended the change last month, saying, "The future talent pipeline for our communities and our state must come both from within our service area and from a broader region,” Schaffer said. “To reach those students, we first have to be understood and considered. Our research shows that the current name creates confusion about where we are located, while the community college label can lead prospective students to assume we offer fewer opportunities than we actually do. A clearer name will help us enter that broader marketplace and connect more students with the education and experiences that prepare them to contribute to Wyoming’s workforce.”
But not everyone loved the idea. Central Wyoming College in Riverton opposed the change, according to Cowboy State Daily.

But Cheyenne Mayor Patrick Collins threw his weight behind the proposed change.

LCCC Board President Says Change Will Aid Long-Term Success

After the board decided to change the name, Jess Ketcham, Chairman of the LCCC Board, said, "After careful consideration, extensive research, and valuable public input, the Board concluded that this change positions the College for long-term success while remaining true to its mission," Ketcham said. "Wyoming State College better reflects the institution we have become and the opportunities we provide. This decision honors our proud legacy while ensuring future generations recognize the education available through this incredible institution."

According to a new release from the college, "The transition to Wyoming State College will be implemented thoughtfully over the coming months. Beginning immediately, the College will undertake the necessary operational, regulatory, and branding activities required to support the change. The official transition to the Wyoming State College name will occur on July 1, 2027."
