Dr. A.J. Meares has been appointed as Laramie County's new County Health Officer.

He replaces Dr. Stan Hartman, who is retiring after 22 years in the post.

Dr. Meares Has Practiced Locally For Almost 20 Years

That's according to a news release from Cheyenne-Laramie County Public Health. The post says Dr. Meares "earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Wyoming before completing medical school at Creighton University. He went on to complete his fellowship in nephrology at Johns Hopkins University. Dr Meares has practiced medicine locally for almost 20 years and is recognized as a highly skilled nephrologist and respected leader in the medical community."

The release quotes Kathy Emmons, Executive Director of Cheyenne-Laramie County Public Health as saying “We are confident Dr. Meares’ expertise and leadership will continue the tradition of strong public health in Laramie County, said Emmons. “His deep ties to the community and medical knowledge make him an excellent choice to serve as County Health Officer.”

Dr. Hartman had served for over two decades, dealing with a number of challenges over that period, including the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the West Nile virus and even anthrax concerns.

The release quotes him as saying

"My 22 years at Cheyenne-Laramie County Public Health have been interesting, occasionally challenging, but also rewarding.  The best part was the staff of dedicated public health professionals with whom it was my privilege to work." said Dr. Hartman. “I am proud of the progress that public health has made in that time, and I know I am leaving this work in good hands.”
