When visiting Wyoming, most travelers focus on the most well-known areas. But that means they often miss those little towns that are so very charming, like the ones in Northern Wyoming.

These towns have so much to offer those who want to see the real Wyoming.

Key Small Towns in Northern Wyoming

Sheridan: Often called the "Emerald City," it is a vibrant railroad and historic ranching town with over 17,000 residents. The Bighorn Mountains are its backdrop. Make sure to visit Trail End State Historic Site, local dude ranches, and the historic Mint Bar.

Cody: Founded by Buffalo Bill, this wonderful little town is a major gateway to Yellowstone National Park. Be sure to visit the Buffalo Bill Center of the West and Old Trail Town.

Buffalo: A scenic little place tucked into the foothills of the Bighorn Mountains. Stroll downtown. Explore the Occidental Hotel and the Jim Gatchell Museum.

Thermopolis: You won't forget its natural mineral waters; it is home to Hot Springs State Park (featuring the massive Big Spring) and the Wyoming Dinosaur Center. Ask where to see the free-range bison; don't miss that.

Ten Sleep: This is a tiny town of 200 people located in the Bighorn Basin foothills. Known for important historical events that have happened there. Known for world-class rock climbing in Ten Sleep Canyon and fishing along Ten Sleep Creek.

Dubois: Right beside the Wind River and the Absaroka Range. Look for the National Bighorn Sheep Interpretive Center and rugged mountain scenery.

Greybull & Basin: A little community of farming and railroad towns sitting along the Bighorn River in the Bighorn Basin. Look for the Bighorn County Historical Museum.

Powell: This town is along the Bighorn Basin near the Montana border; a northern gateway toward Yellowstone.

Lovell serves as a western gateway to the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area and the Yellowtail Reservoir.

Basin is the quiet county seat of Big Horn County, featuring classic early-20th-century brick commercial architecture and deep local roots.
