First Hint Of Changing Leaves In Wyoming – ALREADY?

On Monday, August 31st, I was lamenting that the next day was September. I have nothing against September, but it seems as if this summer was just too short.

Looking out from my radio/podcast studio window, I could see a row of trees going up the street. Several of them show just a slight hint of fall colors.

That hint of color is very subtle. Most people would walk or drive right under those trees and not notice it.

No matter where you are in Wyoming, have a look around, if there are trees near you, and see if you can see that little hint of yellow. If you are in the higher elevations, you are sure to see more of it.

That leads to the question - ALREADY?

This is not surprising, really. Wyoming's trees typically begin to change color in early September. But those are the hints of color. But the big transition happens in October. The timing depends on the altitude. Higher elevations change first.

There is the official start of fall, which is Tuesday, September 22nd on your calendar. But it is also Meteorological Fall, which begins on September 1 and runs through November 30 every year, grouping the calendar months of September, October, and November based on annual temperature cycles. For meteorologists and climatologists, the season actually begins three weeks earlier, on the 1st of September.

Start making your plans to take road trips up into the areas that have the most aspens and other trees that change color. It will be here before you know it.
