So, today is the day that people want to dress up and show that they have "gone green." I'll bet you didn't know these truths about old St. Pat. Take a look as you get your green on.  St. Patrick's Day has become nothing more but another day for people to dress up and get drunk. But if we really know the facts about the main that we hail as a saint, it might change your perspective just a bit.

Today on the Top 5 at 7:45, I'll highlight facts about St. Patrick that we're pretty sure you didn't know. See how many you did know about the man and the day that is celebrated on the 17th of March every year.

  1. What's His Name - Shocking! "Saint Patrick's" name wasn't even Patrick. It was Maewyn Succat. So Happy Maewyn Day!
  2. St. Patrick Was A Bad Boy - The man was a slave and defied his slave owner by bailing out on him. Not only is it said that he was imprisoned, but it wasn't uncommon for him to get into a fight with some local druids now and again.
  3. Pubs Closed - All the local pubs used to be closed on St. Patrick's Day. The sale of alcohol was banned in Ireland until the 1960's.
  4. Blue Not Green - If we REALLY want to be festive on St. Patrick's Day, then we should all be wearing blue, not green. It's been said that the green theme came in the 1798 rebellion when the United Irishmen tried to associate green to myth and legends.
  5. St. Patrick's Day Parade - The parade day was first established in 1737 in Boston Mass by 27 immigrants who lived in the town and wanted people to recognize and celebrate their heritage.
