Cheyenne Police Warn Of Fake Traffic Ticket Scam
Cheyenne Police are warning residents about a fake traffic ticket scam that is being widely reported in the area.
Police say the scam appears to be aimed at fooling people into making payments for non-existent traffic tickets or else to scan suspicious QR codes. CPD spokeswoman Alex Farkas says the fake ticket warnings are mostly being sent via text message.
Here is a sample from the Cheyenne Police Department Facebook page, along with notations highlighting inaccuracies:
The CPD post reminds people:
Please remember:
• Do not scan unknown QR codes
• Do not send payments based on unsolicited notices
• Verify court matters directly through official court contacts
• Report suspicious activity to local law enforcement
Just because a scammer uses official-looking logos, real court names and similar information that seems authentic does not mean a document is legitimate. Similarly, phone scammers these days can "spoof' the actual phone numbers of legitimate law enforcement agencies will use the name of actual police officers or deputy sheriffs in an effort to panic victims into paying or taking actions to reveal important financial info.
Fake Traffic Ticket Scams Are Becoming Common
The fake traffic ticket text scam seems to be a current fad among con artists. That includes statewide scams coming from the ''Wyoming DMV" telling people their licenses will be revoked if they don't pay supposed traffic tickets immediately. That scam has been reported several times, most recently in March of 2026
There is of course, no ''Wyoming DMV" and WYDOT does not collect traffic ticket fines.
And even though Wyoming has no toll roads, in 2025 scammers tried conning Wyoming residents by claiming they owed money for unpaid tolls.
