At a time when many veteran Wyoming lawmakers are calling it quits, Cheyenne Democratic Senator Floyd Esquibel says he's seeking re-election.

The 77-year-old served in the House from 1997 to 2008 and has represented Senate District 8 since 2009.

"We do have some challenges, but hopefully I can help in meeting those challenges," said Esquibel.

Esquibel says he'd like to see the Legislature pass Medicaid expansion and put the Family Literacy Program, the state's tax refund program for the elderly and disabled, back in place.

He's also optimistic the state can find a way to make use of its vast coal resources.

"We're not just going to leave the coal in the ground," said Esquibel. "I think with technology and our data centers we can find a way to change it into a commercially viable alternative."

Esquibel is currently the only candidate to have announced for the seat.
