Depth Carries Indians to the Girls' Indoor Track State Title

With victories in three events and behind their depth, the Cheyenne Central Indians won their sixth girls’ state championship in indoor track on Saturday in Gillette.

Sophomore Jordan Stoddard (Southeast) won the 400-meters in 59.99 seconds. The second victory was by senior Kaitlyn Migneault in the shot put with a mark of 41-1.75. The Indians capped the meet with a victory in the 4x400 meter relay (4:08.29). Central added 16 other finishes in the top-8 that produced points for the team.

Head coach Bruce Mowry was very proud of the way his team competed.

“If you go back and look at the rankings, we were expected to be near the top but not with the dominating performance that we had. We just had great performances from all of our girls this weekend.”

Cheyenne Central finished with 95 team points. Rock Springs was a distant second with 68. Laramie took third with 61.5, while Thunder Basin rounded out the top four for a trophy with 59 team points.

Mowry added, “I think our girls’ work ethic (carried us to another level). They just work so hard and do such a great job. Our out-of-town kids make such a great commitment to being part of our program. They travel to Cheyenne and practice with us. They work really hard on their own, at their schools, and they’re a big part of it.”

The Indians have girls from Torrington, Southeast, and Pine Bluffs.
