Defense Asks for Continuance in Cheyenne Child’s Death
An attorney for the Cheyenne man accused of beating and sexually abusing his girlfriend's two-year-old son prior to his death has filed a continuance in the case.
Twenty-four-year-old John Barrett was scheduled to be in Laramie County Circuit Court this (Thursday) morning, but his preliminary hearing has been rescheduled for July 7 at 1:30 p.m.
Barrett has been charged with two counts of child abuse and first-degree sexual abuse of minor.
Police were notified of the case on May 22 when the child was brought to the hospital with two blacks eyes and extensive bruising on his body.
The child was transferred to Children's Hospital Colorado where he died the next day.
Police continue to investigate the case and say additional charges could follow.
Barrett is being held in the Laramie County Jail on $50,000 cash bond. He could face 25 to 70 years in prison if convicted.
