Thankful to be at this point. That was an overriding sentiment from Wyoming High School Activities Association Commissioner Ron Laird.

In a recent interview with WyoPreps’ David Settle at the boys’ state swimming and diving championships, Laird is happy that Wyoming has gotten through the winter season without any major obstacles popping up.

Laird talks about getting through this winter championship season and ticket policies for regional and state events, particularly basketball and wrestling. He also touched on a couple of decisions for state culminating events at the recent WHSAA Board of Directors meeting on Feb. 9 and 10 in Casper and looking forward to this spring sports season.

The commissioner realizes that the regional basketball format has drawn plenty of criticism. Laird said they’ve had several emails and other correspondence about it, and he even knew about the online petition, but he said that no changes were going to be made this late in the process. Laird stated that a change to go back to the regular postseason tournament formats would have had to be agreed upon last fall and approved by the Board of Directors.
