Colorado Authorities: Crime Ring Stole Over $1.1 Million In Items
Colorado authorities say six suspected members of a California crime ring have been indicted in connection with the theft of over $1.1 million in construction equipment and tools.
That's according to a post on the Larimer County Sheriff's Office Facebook page.
According to the post, the sheriff's office in September of 2020 began investigating the theft of $136,000 worth of tools and construction equipment from Wellington Middle High School, which at that time was still under construction. Suspects allegedly broke into 14 storage containers on the site.
In May of 2021, investigators looked into a similar theft at the Ascent Classical Academy of Northern Colorado, which was also under construction. The release says $43,200 worth of tools and equipment were taken in that theft.
According to the release, Investigator Mesecher with the sheriff's office soon learned that similar crimes were being investigated by Fort Collins Police, Lafayette Police and other front range law enforcement agencies.
The release says "Cases were ultimately combined under the 20th Judicial District (Boulder County) as "Operation Wrecking Ball." Six suspects were identified, and investigators learned that they were part of a criminal enterprise with ties to California. The suspects were recently indicted on multiple charges under the Colorado Organized Crime Control Act (COCCA)."
