YMCA CEO: Cheyenne Y Would Have Needed 1,000 New Memberships
The CEO of the YMCA of Northern Colorado told Townsquare Media of Cheyenne on Friday that the Cheyenne Family YMCA could have remained open if 1,000 new memberships were sold.
Chris Coker said either a single or family membership would count as one membership. But with the Cheyenne Y slated to close on Sept. 26, they are no longer selling memberships at this point.
Current Membership Count Is Around 800
Coker said the current membership count is around 800. He said ideally it should have about 2,500 memberships, but it could have stayed open with around 1,800.
Coker said the decision to close the Cheyenne Y is not one that he is happy about, adding "We would love to keep it open." But he said under current conditions doing so is not financially viable.
According to the Cheyenne Family YMCA website, adult memberships for one person over the age of 26 were $58 per month or $638 per year with a $50 dollar fee to join.
An adult couple could have joined for $69 per month or $749 per year. Family memberships were $77 per month or $847 per year, also with a $50 joining fee. Various other membership categories were available as well.
It's a moot point now though. A person at the Cheyenne Y told Townsquare Media that with a week left before the scheduled closure of the Y, they aren't selling memberships anyway.
The YMCA of Northern Colorado announced on Monday that the Cheyenne Y is closing indefinitely. While the tone of the announcement didn't seem to hold out much hope of the Y reopening, it did say "We are hopeful that there will be an investor or community partner who has the capital and heart to keep the facility as a recreation center for the residents of Cheyenne."
According to the Cheyenne Family YMCA website, the facility first opened in 1958.
