Cheyenne Mayor Rick Kaysen is reminding residents and businesses of their responsibility to clear public sidewalks of snow.

The mayor says he knows people are often frustrated when city crews repeatedly pile snow from the streets onto sidewalks and driveways. But he says the need to keep city streets open and safe to traffic is a priority and oftentimes there is nowhere else to put the snow.

The mayor says under city law it is the duty of the adjoining property owner to remove the snow, even if it is being deposited there by city crews.

Kaysen says when the city gives someone a "courtesy notice" that they need to remove snow from a sidewalk it means someone has complained about the situation. The mayor says people cited for failure to remove snow from a public sidewalk can be fined $100, but he adds city officials try to avoid issuing such citations unless it can't be helped.

He also encourages elderly or disabled people who aren't physically able to remove snow from sidewalks to contact his office, adding the city can often help by putting those people in touch with organizations or people who can help them
