CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Wyoming's biggest city might soon pay more for recycling.

Officials in Cheyenne are asking the City Council to double to $80 per ton the amount the city pays a contractor for sorting and distributing recycled materials.

The reason is China is taking less recycled material from overseas. Chinese officials say there's too much trash and other contamination mixed in with that material.

Cheyenne Public Works Director Vicki Nemecek says the city would try to absorb the extra costs in the short term. No rate increases for residents are planned yet.

City officials in the meantime say residents should be careful about the type of items they put out to be recycled.
