Cheyenne High Schools Could Be The Next To Add Girls Softball
The Albany County School Board unanimously approved girls fastpitch softball this week, making Laramie High School the eighth school in Wyoming to add the sport. Central, East, and South High Schools are expected to join them soon.
Cody, Rock Springs, and Green River were the first districts to approve softball last fall. Casper and Gillette area high schools followed suit earlier this year. With the addition of Laramie, fastpitch girls softball now meets the minimum number of participating schools in order for the Wyoming High School Activities Association to sanction the sport.
The WHSAA Board of Directors could officially add varsity softball next month with the first season slated to begin in spring of 2021. Last week, the Laramie County School District 1 Board met to discuss funding the sport. Another meeting is scheduled in September, according to WyoPreps.
The addition of girls softball would place Wyoming schools back in compliance with federal Title IX regulations for the first time since 2010 when gymnastics was eliminated.
Nearly 600 girls competed at the Wyoming State Softball Championships in July. The annual event is organized by USA Softball of Wyoming included 52 teams in 9 age divisions representing Buffalo, Casper, Cheyenne, Cody, Gillette, Green River, Lander, Laramie, Powell, Riverton, Rock Springs, Wheatland, and Worland.
