An amended version of a ban on oversize vehicles on Cheyenne City streets is headed for a deciding vote in the Cheyenne City Council on Monday night.

The ban would prohibit parking large vehicles on Cheyenne streets for more than 72 hours. But the version the council will be voting on has significant  changes following a substitute version that was approved by the council Committee of the Whole on Wednesday night.

Original Version Has Been Changed Significantly

Under the new version, the law would be paused between five days before Memorial Day and five days after Labor Day. People could apply for a temporary permit good for five days the rest of the year. The permits would cost $15 dollars and would be issued at the discretion of the Cheyenne Police Department. People could re-apply for another one after the original permit expires, but again, whether to approve the permits would be up to the Cheyenne PD.

The changes were proposed by councilman Richard Johnson as a substitute for the original measure, and approved by the committee. During discussion of the changes some council members said they think the amended version of the ordinance doesn't do enough to get the oversize vehicles off city streets. But Johnson said he thinks it's his job to represent all constituents, and the compromise measure helps address concerns of those on both sides of the issue.

Another change from the original version will treat violations like a parking offense, with citations being issued. On a second offense the vehicle could be towed, with the car owner having to get the car back from a tow yard as opposed to the city impound lot.

The ordinance will face a decisive vote on third reading at the regular city council meeting on Monday night.
