Boysen Algae Bloom Prompts Health Advisory
If you're headed to Boysen Reservoir for some late summer recreation, you should know health officials have issued an advisory due to an algae bloom. In a Facebook post, Boysen State Park says the bloom occurred because of high temperatures. The Wyoming Department of Health says such algae blooms are not uncommon this time of year, but when toxic algae are present in the water, they recommend the following to avoid health risks:
- Do not swim or come into contact with large amounts of green scum or algae.
- Do not drink or consume the water. Boiling, filters, and other treatments will not make the water safe.
- Rinse fish with clean water and eat only the fillet portion
- Avoid water spray in areas of green scum
- Do not allow pets or livestock to drink the water, eat algae, or lick fur after contact with the water.
If you or your pet get sick after contact with the water, you're advised to call your doctor, veterinarian, or the Wyoming Poison Control Center at 1-800-222-1222.
Health officials say you can always call and check ahead, to see if the algae problem has resolved.
