NEW YORK (AP) — New Yorkers of all stripes joined in the battle for their city in a recent 24-hour period during the coronavirus pandemic. A taxi driver cruised desolate streets, searching for scarce commuters.

An emergency room doctor and a paramedic labored to hold down a death toll that threatened to surpass the number killed at the World Trade Center on 9/11.

The doctor usually wears full protective equipment only to see certain patients but now dons it as soon as he arrives and keeps it on.

For them and 8.5 million others, Monday was not just another day.
