Wyoming’s Brett Smith Ranks 5th In National Quarterback Voting

Wyoming junior quarterback Brett Smith is among the nation’s leaders in fan voting for this year’s Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award. Smith currently ranks fifth in round 1 of voting for the O’Brien Award. The Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award is presented annually to the nation’s best college quarterback.

This is the seventh year fans have been offered the opportunity to participate in the voting. The Fan Vote counts as 5% during each round of voting and it is combined with the results from the Selection Committee. All NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision quarterbacks enter the season eligible for the award. The list will be narrowed down to 16 semifinalists, which will be announced on Monday, Nov. 4th.

Fans are invited to cast their vote for the nation’s best quarterback as often as once daily at www.VoteOBrien.org. Fan voting for round 1 will remain open until 11 a.m., Mountain Time on Sunday, Nov. 3. Fan vote totals are cleared after each voting round.

A national committee of sports journalists make up the Selection Committee for the O’Brien Award. They are asked to evaluate each candidate on the criteria of his quarterback skills and athletic ability, academics, character, reputation as a team player, leadership and sportsmanship.  Smith is currently ranked No. 6 in the nation in total offense this season, averaging 362 yards of total offense per game.

Each week during the season, the O’Brien Award highlights the top game in the country featuring leading O’Brien Award candidates. This week one of the four games being highlighted by is the Wyoming-San Jose State game involving Wyoming’s Smith and San Jose State senior David Fales.
