UW Professor Recognized

University of Wyoming

A University of Wyoming Professor has been named a fellow of the nation’s pre-eminent professional society for environmental economists and policy.

Jason Shogren, was recognized by the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (AERE) for outstanding professional contributions and demonstrated leadership in the field of environmental economics, according to an AERE release. He received a certificate at a recent ceremony at the World Congress of Environmental and Resource Economists in Istanbul, Turkey.

Shogren is the Stroock Professor of Natural Resource Conservation and Management in the Department of Economics and Finance in the UW College of Business. He received his Ph.D. from UW in 1986 and has been a faculty member since 1995. Shogren has background and research interests that include risk, experimental methods, endangered species, invasive species, climate change, agricultural management, forest management, energy, health and more.

The AERE Fellow designation is a significant honor and has been for 10 years. Nominations are made by the nominees peers in the association membership. Thomas Crocker, is the other AERE Fellow from Wyoming. Along with its European counterpart, AERE is the world’s largest community of environmental and resource economists.

The AERE Board considers each candidate’s public works, contributions in the field, the position held with the employer, AERE activities, membership and accomplishments in other societies when considering nominees for the honor.

Shogren has published more than 200 articles in the past 20 years. Several were co-written with former graduate students. He has directed dozens of Ph.D. students throughout his career.

He has also served as do-editor of Resource and Energy Economists and editor-in-chief of Elsevier’s online Encyclopedia of Resource, Energy, and Environmental Economics. In addition, he was a senior staff economist for the Council of Economic Advisors.

This is just the most recent honor in an impressive string of career accomplishments. Shogren served a year as the “King’s economist” in Sweden and was a lead author of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which was co-recipient of a Nobel Peace prize in 2007.
