A Laramie woman is dead following a collision on Interstate 80 west of Cheyenne Friday afternoon.

Wyoming Highway Patrol Trooper Tyler Matheney says 65-year-old Joel Anne Berrigan was following her husband, who was driving a Penske rental truck, when her Honda CR-V was rear-ended by a UPS truck driven by 62-year-old Michael Shedd of Brighton, Colorado.

“The husband said that there was a commercial vehicle ahead of them that was slowing down because of the fog,” said Matheney. “Visibility was down to just a couple hundred feet at the time, so they began to slow down.”

“Immediately after he (Shedd) struck her from behind, she was pushed into the rear of the yellow, Penske truck and sandwiched between those two vehicles,” Matheney added. “Pretty much the front axle of his (Shedd’s) truck was at the middle of the driver’s seat of the CR-V.”

Matheney says Shedd suffered a broken wrist and Berrigan was pronounced dead on scene. Berrigan’s husband didn’t sustain any injuries.

“(Shedd) said he was at approximately 60-65 mph,” said Matheney. “The other two vehicles were, at their best estimate, slowing down from about 40.”

Shedd, who was cited for driving too fast for conditions and following too closely, was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide. He entered a plea of not guilty in Laramie County Circuit Court today (Monday).

A scheduling conference in Shedd’s case has been set for June 5.
