Stock Says Short-Term Shutdown Impact Minimal

As long as the partial federal shutdown doesn’t last longer than a month there shouldn’t be too much impact on local schools, according to Laramie County School District #1 Superintendent Mark Stock.

But he adds there could be some effect if the shutdown runs over a month, or especially if it lasts several months. Stock says about  $15 million of the district’s $285 million budget is covered by federal money. Because the district is contractually obligated to pay district employees and cannot furlough them, that means the district might have to cover some of those personnel costs and be reimbursed at a latter time.

Stock says another long-term concern could be federal cuts in programs such as Title 1 which is aimed at schools in low income areas.. Stock says the district has already taken a 10 percent cut in those funds, and if the federal program is cut that would eventually have impacts locally.
