Stock Says Most Students Accepting Healthier Lunches
Laramie County School District #1 Superintendent Mark Stock says that it appears most, but not all district students are accepting healthier lunches mandated by new federal guidelines.
Stock says although hard numbers for participation in the school lunch program in the district aren’t available yet, preliminary indications are that those numbers will be down. Stock says that when the first phase of the federally-mandated healthier lunches went into effect last year there was also a decline in participation.
But the superintendent also says informal conversations he’s had with students and lunch room employees seem to show most students don’t have a problem with the changes. New federal rules include calorie limits and an emphasis on fresh fruits and vegetables.
Stock says in district one students also can no longer get free second helpings, but now have to pay for additional servings.
