City of Cheyenne Fire Inspector Byron Mathews says there are some simple steps you should remember if you plan to deep fry a turkey this holiday season.

Mathews says fire departments across the United States will respond to 1000 fires this year in which a deep fryer is involved, The National Fire Association says deep fryer fires result in over $15 million in damage every year. Mathews offers the following safety tips:

-set up the fryer more than 10 feet from your home and never leave it unattended

-place the fryer on flat ground, and make sure the oil is even and steady at all times

-make sure your Thanksgiving turkey is completely thawed and dry

-carefully monitor the temperature while you are frying your bird

-have a fire extinguisher handy-preferably a multipurpose dry powder device
