Work on two railroad ''quiet zones" in Cheyenne has been completed.

The zones are at rail crossings at West Lincolnway and Southwest Drive and on West 24th, just west of Snyder Avenue. The idea behind the zones is to reduce the use of train whistles while keeping the crossings safe.

They feature concrete barriers that keep vehicles from crossing when the crossing gates are down. Assistant City Engineer Nathan Beauheim says the crossings are actually safer than traditional rail crossings, besides being quieter.

The crossings grew out of a 2012 agreement between the Cheyenne City Council and the Wyoming Department of Transportation.  Money for the project came from WYDOT and the city as well as Visit Cheyenne.
