It's the holiday season, and many folks have either already put up a Christmas tree or will be doing so soon.

So do you prefer a real Christmas tree, or do you like the man-made variety?

Those who favor artificial trees point to the convenience they offer. You have one tree, you get it out at the appropriate time, you put it up and you take it down. Over the long term, you save money because you don't have to buy a tree every year. The trees are usually flame-retardent. And of course, they don't trigger allergies.

And of course, artificial trees save real trees from being chopped down and then discarded.

But real trees certainly have advantages as well. There is something about the aroma of a real tree that the fake kind just can't match. It smells like Christmas. Real Christmas trees are biodegradable, unlike artificial trees. Most artificial trees are also made with toxic chemicals, including carcinogens. And if the idea of buying products made in China bothers you, it's worth mentioning that most artificial trees are made in that country.
