Cheyenne Police are reminding people that a new and tougher set of regulations on door-to door sales takes effect on May 1 in the city.

Among other things, people selling items door-to-door must wear or at least display a license photo ID badge, which is issued through the city clerk's office. Door-to-door sales will only be allowed between the hours of 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.

Salespeople won't be allowed to lie to potential customers about such things as neighbors who are buying a product or service. They also will be banned from lying about the true purpose of what they are trying to sell. They also will be barred from rude or overly aggressive sales tactics and won't be allowed to enter a home without being invited in.

Blocking people from leaving their homes will also be illegal.

But the ordinance does have exemptions from the licensing rules for non-profit, religious and educational organizations.

Cheyenne Police Department spokesman officer Dan Long says police have received a lot of complaints about overly aggressive or dishonest door-to-door salespeople in the past, and the new rules are an attempt by the city to control those kind of problems.

He says anyone who thinks someone is violating the rules can call the police department.
