Nevada Wildfires Grow
LAS VEGAS (AP) — Two mountain wildfires continue raging in Nevada.
Firefighters are working to gain the upper hand on a blaze near Las Vegas that has kept hundreds of people from their homes.
More than 750 firefighters, including 18 elite Hotshot crews, are battling the wildfire officials say has been fueled by salt cedar trees along the San Pedro River. One home and two other structures have been destroyed in the remote community of Kearny. It’s also threatening the town’s airport.
A wildfire in northern Nevada, southwest of Reno, has now grown to more than 27 square miles. Fire officials have closed popular back-country roads leading to the state capital into the mountains because of the fire’s path.
Firefighters had hoped to have it contained yesterday, but those hopes were dashed Sunday when strong winds fanned the fire into an inferno.
Officials say no homes have been lost.
