Meg Lanker-Simons Cited For Making UW Crushes Post

Trevor T. Trujillo, Townsquare Media

UPDATE (3:15 PM)- Laramie Attorney Charles Pelkey, who is representing Meg Lanker-Simons says that she will enter a not guilty plea when she is arraigned.  Pelkey declined further comment, stating that they have not yet seen the official allegations.

UPDATE (12:30 PM)- The Univeristy of Wyoming has released an official written statement saying that “the citation followed a police interview of Lanker-Simons and a search of her computer equipment pursuant to a search warrant. UW police obtained substantial evidence verifying that the offending Facebook post came from Lanker-Simons’ computer, while the computer was in her possession.”  Lanker-Simons has not been able to be reached for comment.  However, some sources claiming to have spoken to her say that she denies the allegations and that she also denies having admitted to making the post.

The UW statement expands the allegation, saying “Lanker-Simons received the citation as a result of false statements she made to the UW Police Department. The UWPD investigation concluded that she was responsible for the post on the now-dismantled ‘UW Crushes’ Facebook site in which she ostensibly was targeted as a potential victim of sexual violence.”

University of Wyoming Police have issued a citation to Meg Lanker-Simons for a charge of interference.  According to the citation “Subject admitted to making a controversial post on UW Crushes webpage and then lied about not doing it.”

An anonymous statement posted to the UW Crushes Facebook page last week caused a controversy.  The post stated that the author would like to copulate with Lanker-Simons in an angry manner.  At the time, Lanker-Simons came out publicly against the post saying that she had felt threatened by it and perceived the post as a rape-threat.

University of Wyoming spokesperson Chad Baldwin said that the citation was the result of UW Police Department’s investigation into the UW Crushes Facbook incident, but could not comment further.  He said that the University may say more later on Tuesday.

The citation was dropped off at Albany County Circuit Court Tuesday morning.

A demonstration and protest against rape culture, spurred by the UW Crushes Facebook incident, happened Monday on the UW campus.  Lanker-Simons was a speaker at the event, where she called out the the anonymous poster.

Protest organizer Amy Pauli said in an interview before the event, that while the UW Crushes Facebook post had been the catalyst for the event, it went beyond that.

“It’s not just about the page.  It’s about the way rape-culture becomes fostered among students,” said Pauli.

The citation lists an issuing date and time of 4:30 in the afternoon, Monday.  About three hours following the closure of the demonstration.

Lanker-Simons is scheduled to appear in Albany County Circuit Court in mid-May where formal charges will be read.  In the court of law, she is considered innocent until found guilty by the court.

Lanker-Simons made headlines in 2010 when she was a plaintiff in a successful lawsuit against the University of Wyoming.  The University was sued after it had dis-invited controversial figure William Ayers from speaking on campus.
